Lecture: Agrarian dynamics and natural resources management in mountain areas
On Thursday 31st of March, Ms Majda Mourou will give a lecture at NIMAR about: AGRARIAN DYNAMICS AND NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN MOUNTAIN AREAS. A RETURN OF EXPERIENCE ON AN AGRO-ECONOMIC RESEARCH IN THE MOROCCAN HIGH ATLAS AND THE ANTI ATLAS.
Abstract:
In Morocco's mountain areas, still, far from public planning policies, the way of life is mainly influenced by difficult agro-ecological conditions that are not very suitable for the extension of farming. The populations of these regions have long coped with this vulnerability by taking advantage of this environment through combined and concerted management of agro-sylvopastoral resources and various spatial mobilities (internal and international migration). However, the disturbance of public policies and the new aspirations of the national market has led to the transformation of the structure of agrarian systems and a destabilization of the social foundations of territorial organization.
To carry out this study on the forms of local management of natural resources in the mountain context, it was necessary to develop a kind of methodological arrangement that would compensate for the lack of data and statistics on these regions. This study is based on a systemic approach to agrarian structures that seek to understand how successive changes in the modes of land use and occupation and the mechanisms promoted by public policies have produced new forms of territory and society that may be less resilient to economic and environmental instability.
