After five intensive college weeks and a lot of Arabic, a completely different element of Morocco came up: the Berbers. For a week we were lectured by Professor Maarten Kossmann, a specialist in the field of Berber languages and cultures at Leiden University. It was with great enthusiasm that he shared his broad knowledge about this with us. That is how we started the week with an overview of Berber-language regions. These are not only located in Morocco, but are spread over North Africa and parts of the Sahel region. In the afternoon, we went more into the different Berber languages. Although these are often lumped together, they are not mutually intelligible. As students of Arabic, we can imagine something about this in the meantime.
