Jan Hoogland: Bridging the gap between Arabic and Dutch speakers

The presentation at Espace Kitab (SIEL) will introduce Jan Hoogland's forthcoming dictionary release, emphasizing the linguistic hurdles faced in its development. With 40 years of experience instructing Arabic to non-native speakers, Jan Hoogland will delve into the process of assembling the dictionary and bridging the gap between Arabic and Dutch speakers.

Speaker Jan Hoogland

Jan Hoogland (1957)  is an Arabist specialized in linguistics. He studied Arabic in Utrecht and worked as an Arabic teacher at Radboud University Nijmegen from 1984 to 2018. From 2009 to 2015 he was director of the Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR), which was founded in Rabat in 2006 under his leadership. He compiled a Moroccan dictionary together with Roel Otten, and in 2007 the large Arabic dictionaries were published by Bulaaq publishers, of which he was the coordinator and co-editor-in-chief. In 1996, the first edition of his Moroccan Arabic course book was published by Bulaaq publishers; a course for self-study and classroom use. A German and English edition was published in recent years. He focuses on Arabic linguistics and lexicography, and comments on developments around Morocco.

Nabila Louriz holds the position of Professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, Hassan II University of Casablanca. Her extensive body of published work predominantly examines Moroccan Arabic and its interconnectedness with other languages and Arabic dialects.
